Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), is a militant Islamist organization operating primarily in the Sahel region of West Africa. It was formed in March 2017 as a merger of several existing jihadist groups in the region, including Ansar Dine, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), and Al-Mourabitoun. JNIM is affiliated with al-Qaeda and has been responsible for numerous attacks in Mali and neighboring countries, targeting both military and civilian targets. The group seeks to establish an Islamic state based on its interpretation of Sharia law in the region.

The Coordination of Azawad Movements (French: Coordination des Mouvements de l'Azawad, CMA) is a coalition of ethnic Tuareg and Arab rebel groups in Mali. The CMA was formed in 2014 during peace talks between the Malian government and various rebel factions, following the outbreak of the Tuareg rebellion in 2012. The coalition consists of several armed groups representing the interests of these communities in northern Mali, including the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), the High Council for the Unity of Azawad (HCUA), and the Arab Movement of Azawad (MAA). The CMA has been involved in negotiations with the Malian government and international stakeholders to address the political and security challenges facing the northern regions of Mali.
